After winning not only one but two BCI retaining wall tender packages MMC Civils, Rope access and high risk confined space teams were a fundamental part of helping Eurovia Island Roads meet their Milestone 14. Milestone 14 a much talked about package to the Core Investment Period (CIP) of the Highways on the Isle of Wight and there was a lot of pressure to get the works completed within a time frame.
MMC Cross trained Civils, Rope Access and High Risk Confined space team were required to undertake a multitude of repairs ranging from simple pointing work to masonry parapet repairs, upgrades and installations, building large natural stone retaining walls, partial or full wall rebuilds, vegetation removal, eco plugging, repairing scoured abutments, helical bar stitching, temporary works, form works, and bracings.
These works were undertaken across 33 different locations around the Island, 15,000 man hours, some in private gardens and driveways or public stairways and footpaths but others in conservation areas such as SSSR and RAMSAR sites. Consents were required from English heritage, Natural England, Environment agency, MMO licences, local town councils, private residents, all formed part of the organisation prior to each project being worked on.
There were many environmental factors that had to be considered during our projects, we came across countless lizards, bats, water voles and nesting birds along with bee's nests and wasp's nests. The wasps weren't so friendly! In most cases the team were aware of the insects and animals they were about to encounter and special adjustments to the works could be made, for example lizards live in the old natural stone walls throughout Ventnor in repairing these walls it was important to keep some lizard holes for them to return to.
