Isle of Wight divers MMC carry out inspections on behalf of Bournemouth Borough Council's Highways Structures Department. The bi-annual maintenance and inspection of confined areas is a crucial part of all authorities risk management.
To gain access to the underground chambers running either side of the Richmond Hill Interchange and Wellington Road Highway, MMC's confined space team had to remove large cast iron access covers. Before entry the team used gas monitors to determine that the area was safe to access, and when entering the chambers carried escape BA.
The penetration team had coms equipment to ensure constant communications with the supervisor along with intrinsically safe lighting, capable of reaching 70 meters to the far end of the chambers, to allow them to ensure data that had been misplaced (by others) could be recorded and reported back to the client.
The MMC team undertook a visual survey followed by a measurement profile survey to enable a cad drawing to be produce and sent to the client for their records.
