Due to this winters storms, Britain is suffering some of the worst flooding in decades. Severe down pours and howling gales are causing the land to be saturated, and the water run off to sweep all manor of debris in to already bursting rivers and streams. This debris can cause dangerous blockages within bridges and culverts allowing the water to rise and flood.
This has been the case on the Isle of Wight in Wroxall. Ringway Island Roads Ltd are the main contractor responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the islands highways, after their efforts to remove a blockage within a culvert were unsuccessful, it was clear a specialised dive team were required and they called upon MMC Diving Services.
Our specialised confined space team penetrated the small space using breathing apparatus, and managed to cut away commercial bins, logs, Christmas trees and old bicycle wheels.
The build up of such a large amount of debris in the culvert had caused flooding within the town of Wroxall, blocking off roads and leaving many families without access to their homes.
"We would like to express our thanks to everybody that was involved with the clearance under the bridge in Wroxall high street.
The week previously it was high pressure jetted and although this improved the flow considerably, it was the divers that climbed into the small space and manually cleared out the culvert. We are all really impressed with the lengths island roads and their team have gone to to resolve the problem. It's now flowing very well indeed, we have access back to our properties and have noticed fish back in the stream."
