January and February 2014 have seen the Country subject to some violent storms and unprecedented torrential downpours, resulting in extensive flooding.
On the Isle of Wight a number of bridge structures have been affected with blocked culverts, causing road closures due to damage and undermining.
Island Roads are the main contractor responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of highways on the Isle of Wight.
In January Ringway Island Roads Ltd called upon MMC Diving Services to site visit one of the Islands bridges in Wroxall, where there had been severe flooding due to a blocked culvert. Previously, high pressure water jetting had been used which had proven unsuccessful, and it was clear a specialised dive team were required. MMC's confined space team penetrated the small space, clearing the issue within 24 hrs!
Due to the success of this task, we were appointed the works on another culvert in Shanklin Old Village. Once again, this required our confined space team and their specialist breathing apparatus to penetrate the culvert and locate a large blockage. So severe was the obstruction, that an air lance was used to clear the loose debris that was wedged within the culvert, eventually revealing the extent of the blockage; three large trees, several sandbags, bricks and other debris.
"I just wanted to thank you and your team for all your efforts today at Shanklin."
