I.O.W divers MMC have just completed some emergency diving works for Ringway Island Roads as part of the maintenance and repairs program for the Isle of Wight Council.
The diving works required a sub surface void to be underpinned and filled with cement. This has appeared due to the swiftly moving river flows causing under scour below the bridge abutment, which can compromise the integrity of the structure.
Bridge scour is one of the main causes of bridge failure along with other hydraulic related causes. Once the underpinning had been completed the degradation scour was addressed. This had caused lowering of the riverbed and the exposure of a void in front of the scour hole that the team filled with rock armour.
Due to the sensitivity of this area and the high profile location of the bridge being the main traffic junction on the island it was vital to use a well tested, proven method to complete the scour works whilst causing zero impact or effect on the traffic, public and environment.
The MMC dive team carried out and completed the inspection survey works and scour works on time and on budget.
"Sam and the team at MMC Diving Services were both professional and a pleasure to work with. The project at Coppins Bridge could not have run more smoothly on site and this was mainly thanks to MMC's great organisation and foresight. I would not hesitate to recommend them and I look forward to working with them again in the future."
