Following a survey conducted by MMC Divers and their engineers in 2013, more scour deterioration was found below the beautiful stone of the Iford bridge.
In 2014 MMC Diver secured the contract to remove all the old bag work and concrete repairs which were installed previously as attempts to prevent under scour from the listed bridge in Bournemouth and replace this with a more sustainable solution by using four large concrete mattresses upstream and four large concrete mattresses downstream.
In 2014 MMC broke up and removed over 100 tonnes of concrete using divers and underwater breakers, after the river burst its banks in the winter of 2013 and local residents were evacuated from the area. There was hope that it may be possible to lower the inverts and reduce the risk of flooding in the local area, unfortunately after we undertook a series of core plug samples to establish the footing depth it was established that the inverts would have to remain at their current position.
4 mattresses were completed downstream and then the heavy rains kicked in causing extremely difficult working conditions and so the decision was made to close down and return in the summer of 2015.
MMC Divers returned in the summer of 2015 with Hydraulic and pneumatic tools, a full workshop container and 6 road transportable steel pontoons complete with spud legs and wells. Our team of highly motivated professionals completed the dredging, levelling of the seabed, underwater burning of the old sheet piles and installation and filling of the large pro-serve mattresses.
Each mattress was filled with 46 tonnes of underwater grout. The entire task was completed ahead of the allocated time and within budget.
