Island company MMC Diving Services won the tender to dewater and undertake repair works to Pennyfeathers Bridge at Smallbrook on the Isle of Wight.
The surface repair bridge works included brick replacement, crack stitching, radial pinning and repointing works. Subsurface structural works were unknown prior to dewatering due to the black water conditions of the river.
This design helped limit the environmental impact of noise and fumes from the continuous running of pumps during the over pumping. Due to the duration the dam would be in place, our teams also installed a 100m x12 inch hose from further upstream through the whole structure, to allow eels and fish to past.
Once the structure was dry Island Road engineers undertook a survey and confirmed the subsurface works required which included further crack stitching, repointing of over 200 meters, a new re-enforced cast concrete extended invert, and gabion baskets instated at the upstream entrance of the bridge.
Even with the extra works packages, these works were completed within half the time making a significant cost saving for our client.
