The re-acquisition of pUXO targets at the marine and beach sites could not have been more challenging due to the heavy WW2 activities during the Normandy landings of June 1944.
Following the geophysical survey and target identification phase, seabed anomalies were assessed as potential UXO (pUXO) targets and earmarked for investigation. The water surrounding the area was reasonably shallow which proved advantageous for the diving operations however the operational tidal windows particularly during spring tides were very restrictive. The main project challenge was to complete the work scope without causing disruption to the scheduled start date for the scallop fishermen.
With no equipment failures and a superb team, this project was completed quickly, safely, and efficiently. The excellent visibility encountered by the divers during the diving windows enabled effective high confidence target prosecution to be conducted. For all areas the project was successfully completed.
All work was carried out in accordance with CIRIA report C754 (UXO risk in the marine environment) and is planned, managed and overseen by experienced marine UXO professionals.
